Time today for combining student thinking with real world math - scale and ratio.
Students initially spent time brainstorming what their classroom would contain: tables, chairs, rugs, beanbags, cookie pads etc. However on their sketches we could see that there wasn't a strong understanding of scale. In some cases, a student table took up the space of a third of the room! SO out came the metre sticks and walking metre wheels and students got busy measuring everything and anything in sight. We started with the room dimensions and then used these measurements to make up the room on the floorplan.
Two great websites helped us with drawing a model to scale. I really liked Classroom Architect for it's realistically looking school furniture. Students also have the opportunity to draw their own shapes.
Another site was floorplanner.com although this does require sign up and students can only create one design before having to pay. A further option would be LucidChart as we have this connected to our student email accounts. This has a wide variety of objects to choose from and just like Classroom Architect, it has an easy to use drag and drop feature.
Students worked collaboratively and took different roles within the group to get the task done effectively. Here are some of the students in action.
